What Is the Chantix Settlement?
Pfizer has agreed to a $44 million settlement over allegations involving its branded smoking-cessation drug Chantix.
The lawsuit alleges that Pfizer manufactured and sold Chantix containing an undisclosed nitrosamine. Pfizer denies wrongdoing, and the Court has not decided which side is right. The settlement still requires final court approval.
Pfizer is a global pharmaceutical company headquartered in New York. Chantix is its brand name for varenicline, a prescription treatment used to help people stop smoking.
Who Can File a Claim?
The settlement covers people who paid any amount toward a retail purchase of Pfizer-brand Chantix in the United States or its territories between September 29, 2015 and September 17, 2021.
For individual consumers, qualifying payments can include:
- copays
- coinsurance
- deductible payments
- other out-of-pocket amounts paid for Chantix prescriptions
Certain third-party payors, including health plans, are also covered but use a separate claim form. Excluded groups include Pfizer and its officers, directors, managers, employees, subsidiaries and affiliates; government agencies or actors; and people who previously opted out of the settlement class.
How Much Money Can Consumers Get?
There is no fixed payment amount for individual consumers. Payments will be calculated on a pro rata basis using each approved claimant’s out-of-pocket Chantix spending and cannot exceed what that person paid.
Consumer claims are capped collectively at 20% of the Available Settlement Fund. That is the amount remaining after any court-approved attorneys’ fees, litigation expenses, notice and administration costs, and class representative service awards are deducted from the $44 million fund.
The final payment will depend on the total amount of approved consumer claims and the money available in the consumer portion of the fund.
No Proof Is Needed to File a Claim
Consumers self-report the number of Chantix prescriptions they purchased and their total out-of-pocket cost. The consumer claim form does not ask for a Notice ID or Claim ID.
You do not need to upload receipts or other documentation when filing. The Settlement Administrator can request proof later, and the claim form says claims may be audited for accuracy and fraud.
Useful documentation may include:
- an insurance explanation of benefits showing a Chantix payment
- pharmacy records showing you paid for Chantix
- prescription records for Chantix
If you already have records, the online form allows you to upload them voluntarily with your claim.
How to File a Chantix Settlement Claim
Consumers can submit a claim through the official Chantix consumer claim form.
Claims filed online must be submitted by September 14, 2026. Paper claims must be postmarked by the same date.

When Will Payments Be Sent?
There is no payment date yet.
The Court has scheduled a final approval hearing for October 13, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. If the settlement is approved, payments will still depend on the settlement becoming final and the Settlement Administrator completing the claims process.
Why Was There a Chantix Lawsuit?
The impurity at issue was N-nitroso-varenicline.
In 2021, Pfizer progressively expanded a voluntary Chantix recall and ultimately recalled all lots of 0.5 mg and 1 mg Chantix tablets in the United States after N-nitroso-varenicline was found at or above FDA’s interim acceptable intake level.
FDA said long-term exposure to N-nitroso-varenicline may carry a potential increased cancer risk, but there was no immediate risk to patients taking the medication. The agency said the health benefits of quitting smoking outweighed the nitrosamine-related cancer risk.
What Happens If You Do Nothing?
If you qualify but do nothing, you will not receive a settlement payment.
You will remain part of the settlement class and, if the settlement becomes final, give up the right to bring your own lawsuit against Pfizer over the claims released by this settlement.
