Esjay Busy Board Recall: 276,000 Toddler Toys Pulled Over Choking Hazard

Esjay Busy Board Recall

The Esjay busy board recall covers about 276,000 felt activity boards sold on Amazon because red knobs on one page can detach and choke a child. CPSC announced it on September 17, 2026. There is no refund. The remedy is a free replacement page, and you have to destroy the bad one to get it.

CPSC lists Shenzhen Yishijie Technology Co., Ltd., doing business as Esjay US, as the manufacturer. The boards are made in China, and Esjay handles the recall directly.

Which Products Are Affected

All Esjay Toddler Busy Board Montessori Toys are covered. CPSC lists no model numbers or lot codes, so there is nothing printed on the board to match against.

The boards are blue felt with carrying handles, elastic cords, and button closures. Cartoon dinosaurs are printed on the front. The back carries 26 small squares, one per letter of the alphabet, each with a letter and a cartoon animal.

Each board has five pages. The page with the red knobs is the second page. That is the only page being replaced.

Why Was It Recalled

The boards are made for children under three, and the red knobs can come off. A detached knob is small enough to block a toddler’s airway, which puts the toy in violation of the federal small parts ban that applies to products for that age group.

CPSC reports no incidents or injuries.

What Should Consumers Do

  • Take the board away from your child and stop using it.
  • Contact Esjay for repair instructions.
  • Check the second page to see whether any knobs are already missing.

Refund, Replacement, or Repair Information

Esjay replaces the defective page rather than the board.

You will be asked to unzip the page carrying the red knobs, write “RECALLED” on both sides of it, and throw that page away. Email a photo of the disposed page to [email protected], and Esjay sends a replacement page in return.

Reach Esjay US at 888-206-9309, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific, Monday through Friday. The recall page is at esjay.store/recall, also reachable by clicking Recall at the top of esjay.store.

CPSC publishes no deadline for requesting the replacement.

Where Was It Sold

Amazon.com only, from March 2023 to July 2026, for between $18 and $30. CPSC lists no physical stores or other online retailers.

That window is long enough that many boards have since been handed down or put into storage between children.

If Your Child Has Used the Board

Look wherever the board has been: car seats, diaper bags, under furniture, and anywhere else a loose knob could have rolled.

A child with a blocked airway may not cough or make any noise. If your child is choking, call 911. If you believe a knob was swallowed, or your child has been coughing, gagging, drooling, or breathing noisily without explanation, contact a doctor and mention the recall by name.

How to Report a Problem

Report incidents involving the boards at SaferProducts.gov, or call the CPSC hotline at 800-638-2772.

If Esjay does not respond to your replacement request, CPSC runs a recall complaint form for consumers who cannot get a remedy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child use the other four pages while I wait for the replacement?

No. CPSC’s instruction covers the whole board, not just the defective page, and stands until the replacement arrives.

What if I bought it secondhand or got it as a gift?

The recall follows the product, not the receipt. Esjay asks for a photo of the marked page, not proof of purchase, so a board bought used or received as a gift qualifies the same way.

Does Amazon handle this, or Esjay?

Esjay. Every unit was sold through Amazon, but CPSC directs consumers to the manufacturer for the remedy. An Amazon return is a separate process and will not get you a replacement page.

What if the red knobs are already missing?

Missing knobs mean at least one loose piece is somewhere in your home. Find them before anything else, then follow the same steps. The page still qualifies for a replacement with its knobs gone.

Can I just cut the knobs off myself and keep using it?

That is not the approved remedy, and it leaves you with a board CPSC still considers recalled. The page is meant to be removed and replaced, not modified. Improvising a fix also costs you the photo evidence Esjay wants before sending the new page.
