How to Read a Recall Notice: A Plain-English Field Guide

Official recall notices follow a predictable format. Once you know what each section means, you can decide in under a minute whether a recall applies to you.

Find the product and model

Start with the product name, model number, and date or lot codes. Match these against the label on your own item — usually on the base, back, or a sewn-in tag.

Understand the hazard

The notice explains the risk (fire, fall, contamination, etc.) and how many incidents or injuries have been reported.

Look for the remedy

This is the part that matters most: whether you’re owed a refund, replacement, free repair, or reimbursement — and exactly how to claim it.

Note the deadlines

Some remedies have claim windows. Note any dates and file promptly.
